Data Description

Coherent Ionosphere Doppler Receiver (CIDR) systems measure the Doppler shift in the VHF and UHF. The relative electron content (rTEC) along the line-of-sight from the satellite to the receiver can be determined from these Doppler shifts. CIDR receivers in the polar region which are currently operational are located at:

  • Sondre Stromfjord, Greenland (67.0°N, 50.9°W)
  • Narsarsuaq, Greenland (61.2°N, 45.4°W)

Data coverage: At present over ten satellites are broadcasting the VHF/UHF signals. Typically, each satellite is within the CIDR field-of-view for 15-20 minutes over 160 degrees of elevation. While the data rate can be as high as 1kHz, the typical data rate is 1Hz.

Geographic Location Latitude Span: From +61° To +67°
Center Longitude: 48.6°W
Coverage: Greenland
NOTE: Coverage varies due to varying satellite viewing geometry.
Archive Information The data is stored at ARL:UT and is available on request. Efforts are underway to set up a public database.

Date of last update: 18 January 2007
